A Tale of Two Terrible People
The book introduces readers to Mr. and Mrs. Twit, who are quite possibly the "nastiest and most disgusting" of all Dahl's characters . They are a spiteful, lazy, and unkempt couple who spend their days playing vile practical jokes on each other, from worms in spaghetti to a frog in the bed . Their cruelty extends beyond their marriage; they keep a family of pet monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, trapped in a cage and force them to stand on their heads to create an "upside-down monkey circus" . They also have a terrible habit of catching birds on their glue-covered "Big Dead Tree" to bake into bird pies .
The story follows the monkeys, aided by the arrival of the Roly-Poly Bird from Africa, as they decide they have had enough and plot their revenge against the terrible Twits . Using the Twits' own tricks and a pot of "Hugtight" sticky glue, the animals turn the Twits' house upside down, leading to a fitting and hilarious comeuppance for the foul couple .
What to Expect
Revolting Humor: Full of Dahl's signature gross-out details, from the food stuck in Mr. Twit's beard to the unpleasant pranks .
Themes: The book explores justice, revenge, and the idea that cruelty will ultimately be punished. It plays to a child's "unmerciful sense of justice" .
Memorable Characters: Mr. Twit with his filthy beard, Mrs. Twit with her glass eye and walking stick, and the clever Muggle-Wump monkeys are all unforgettable .
